  1. Hi TT:

The local muni I play in NY, Mohansic, is having a 9 hole hickory shaft tournament. They are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the club. Two man scramble, period balls included. Anyone else ever play in one of these?

I haven’t but I had a fellow member that regularly played them. For the occasion he had all the clothing, last seen in total worn by Payne Stewart. As well as a ‘49 Buick driven on Sundays and to hickory club tournaments. His regular clubs were current Titleist.

Would you have your own or will the club be able to supply them? There is a vendor in KY that sells new ones. John Ashford has a sideline supplying hickory clubs in CA. He plays them at his charity venture, a.k.a. Goat Hill community golf course.

They use to have them at the first club I belonged to back in the 80's. Never played in them though. Have hit the clubs and find them interesting. I purchased a hickory shaft 5 iron at Goodwill Industries for three dollars and took it by our local muni to donate for display purposes in the display case. The second assistant immediately took it to the driving range and hit it with regular range balls and immediately snapped in in half. Not to happy with his actions. Some people in this world just have to be different and do their thing. Oh, he no longer works there. No quit the distance we are use to with today's equipment.
  4. Hi Chuck, sorry to hear that. What are we to do with these young whippersnappers? Brock, thanks for the advice, I will have my repair kit ready to go for Friday.

DonO, the company supplies one set per twosome. I will not be in knickers and long sleeves however, temps supposed to be mid-90's with humidity about the same.

Yes have played about a dozen times with hickory clubs. A few keys to success: practice with a ladies flex club to get used to the tempo at which you will need to swing the club. Bring some whipping thread and clear nail polish or super glue, as you will undoubtedly crack a shaft at some point and will need to repair it during the round. Judging distances is hard, but once you figure it out it's not too bad.
  6. cally in the early 1980's had a wedge line called the Hickory Shafts...very cool....

I wonder if it would be cheating to use these? LOL
  7. Update on the 9 hole Hickory Shotgun Scramble. My stepson and I shot 43, which was slightly better than most. I did win the long drive, and thinking about how smooth the tempo had to be with those clubs helped me shoot 79 today on my birthday. My putting wasn't sharp, but the best ball striking round this year. First time in a while in the 70s after struggling for the last month and a half which saw my index go up from a 7.3 to 10.3.
