Last week I organized a golf tournament for my company (bpx - British Petroleum’s Exploration company in the US). Each year we designate a full day to discuss our people & culture, safety at work, and have time to build relationships across our different business units, which we call X-Day. I had the pleasure to organize the events for our people in the Permian Basin/West Texas operating area and we went to Lake Carlsbad Golf Course in Carlsbad, NM. We had a 7am shotgun and I was in the team that went off of #1. Hole #3 was the closest to the pin contest and boy did I embrace that challenge. Hole 3 is a sweet little Par 3 and I had an easy 9 iron with my AP2’s to land my #4 Titleist Velocity ball on the green the was 138 yards away (image of ball is attached). I walked off the tee box to get back in the cart and keep the team on pace, but they all started yelling and telling me that it was in the hole! I didn’t get to see it! But we were all very excited and one of the guys in my group took a fabulous video from the tee box to the cup where we confirmed it was indeed my ball. All the better because it was one of my favorite balls with the red woman logo which I bought years ago to celebrate women in golf. Since it was the closest to the pin contest hole, I put my name on the marker and put it in the hole. Everyone in the tournament was under the impression I was playing a joke on them but at the end of the tournament when the results were named, the story of my fabulous hole-in-one came out and we played the video for everyone. To boost the epic nature of this, my team won the tournament by a margin of two strokes! We were 8 under and the second place team was 6 under. My eagle and hole-in-1 was the contributing factor to our win! (I also got the longest drive as you’ll see in the photos below).
I am incredibly grateful for the gentlemen I played with who encouraged me to save my ball, the scorecard, and took a wonderful video of the moment in time. I am also grateful for my quality Titleist equipment (club, glove, and ball) that made this life goal a reality!
I’ve played golf since I was 2 and I am 39 now. My father loves the game of golf and his love transitioned into my own love for the game. I was fortunate to earn a position on the Division 1 team at CU Boulder in college and have played for pleasure after that. Two years ago, in a tournament I tore through my labrum in my right hip and it debilitated me such that I had to go into for a major surgery to reattach and reshape my bones in my hip so I could walk again. This is my first summer back to golfing and through the support of friends and family I am getting back to the yardages and precision I was had when I was younger. All of this culminated in my golf affirming hole-in-one last week and I wanted to share my story.
