    Hi team,

I’m working on my putting and just curious of some different drills that everyone use or training aids.

I use the clock/circle and the gate drill currently and both are beneficial but I want continue getting better.

I’m usually around 30-32putts around and I’d love to trim that down into the 26-29 range.

You putting is pretty darn good. That is a pretty darn awesome goal to shoot for and wish you good luck. Hakuana matata.

Great goal to shoot for Clayton. You're pretty close as it is. I use the circle drill, but when I find myself searching for correct pace (usually when I end up 3 putting a couple times a round), I'll take 4 tees and form a square, about 18 inches apart. I'll take 5 balls from 10 feet and if I get them all in the square, I'll go from 12 feet and so on. When I can get all 5 in that square from 28-30 feet that's when I feel my pace is pretty good.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Mike,

I like this drill I’m going to put it in practice.

I like this drill! Speed control has always been my issue!

If my stroke feels off or if i see the ball jumping off the face to the right or left I use an 18" metal ruler as a training aid. Put the ball on the hole at the end of the ruler and make sure I can role the ball all the way down the ruler on a flat portion of the green. If you can't get it started on line then reading the green and picking an aim point is pretty useless. If you are rolling it straight down the ruler then work on your green reading and alignment to your aim point. Working on a good, consistent, repetitive, boring preshot routine also helps calm the nerves and puts the mind in a good place to sink putts.

At the TTI last year Brad Faxon showed us a similar drill. Place a dime 2 feet down the line and make sure your ball goes over it. This will help you get consistent with your starting line. Great tip.

I recently tried the Stack Putting app (they have a 1 month free trial) and it has been a game changer to providing a structured "random 18 hole test" to measure improvement. It provides great analytics on strokes gained by distances and quantifies pulls/pushes and distance control. Makes me more aware of my tendencies by distance.
  10. I usually do circle drill and use my perfect putt from 2 to 8 feet. But distance control would be course/conditions specific no? Which is usually where I struggle.

All great drills! I practice putting for the ball to die into the hole. Although it adds break and you run the risk of leaving it short, it provides more area for the ball to fall into the hole.
  12. I’m on board with both the clock drill as well as the putting gate using my Cameron putting path tool. It really helps you stay square through the impact zone. But i also like to work on my lag putting by making an effort on five to ten yards out to lag the ball a few feet past. I think the biggest stroke saver is to put my downhill putts a few feet past for an uphill come backer. Utilizing a putting mirror whenever you feel like your eyes are drifting away from the ball helps as well.

Hey Clayton - When I was down in Sea Island GA over the summer I got a putter fitting and a mini clinic. What David Angelotti explained to me is to make more putts I had to focus on better aiming percentage. I was using a putter that was working against me. Once I was able to aim the putter face to my target upwards if 95% of the time rolling the ball to the target was paramount. I started using Visioputting T line and more putts started dropping. I hope that helps.

Clayton, I find a section of a putting green that rolls straight. Then every twelve inches, I put my putter down and place a tee on both ends. I do this out to nine feet. The start making putts at the 2 1/2 ft space. Make 3 before you move back, one foot, then repeat. After you make 3 at the 9 1/2 foot mark, then pick various distances. This will help with speed once you get on the course. While I am currently a higher handicap than I want to be, I usually have 26-28 putts per round.
  15. Great Objective. Keep grinding. I really struggle with lag putting on long putts which probably means I need to hit my irons closer ‍♂️

Ladder drill was always a good drill for me. Also I was using a putting mirror with gates to help with setup. Good luck with the progress

    Great Objective Mate!

I am a regular golfer and it took me 1 year to come to 25-26 putts from 41-42 putts.

    Keep grinding!

    Peace

That is 1.4 putts per green. That is awesome. Sure beats three putts per green.

I did the free trial of TheStack Putting app and really liked it (It is $59/year and may end up doing it) but I found it to be a good way to practice outside of just grooving the stroke. You do a 9 or 18 hole putting course and it tells you what type of putt each should be (you will need a practice green with a variety of holes for this). After each hole, you put in certain stats and at the end it calculates Strokes Gained for you; you just have to be honest about your results. If I remember it says it should take you about 20min to complete 18 holes but I was never able to do that as I needed to find each type of putt it asked for (ie a 6ft uphill left to right putt). Makes for adding some pressure to the practice and keeping you mentally engaged.
