  1. I don't think I need my p wedge ( Titelist 990 Dynamic Gold 100 irons 2 thru wedge ) will I miss it from my quiver ?? I believe that I can substitute it with a softer swinging 9 iron ... and I believe the 9 iron would be better served around the greens for low running chip shots ... any help out there ??

    Bversyp,

I might be the wrong person to ask because my P wedge might be my favorite club in the bag! I guess what it boils down to is this, do you feel comfortable going soft enough with your 9-iron to create a good distance gap between it and your least lofted wedge?
Something else to consider... whatever club you choose to replace your P with, will it be more useful?

    Good luck!

I use my PW a lot around the greens and for short pitches, so I can't imagine taking mine out of my bag. If you feel you can live without it, then take it out for a round or two and see how not having it works out. You won't know until you try it.

Hard to say. Are you removing the wedge to replace it with another club? Are you removing it to save weight? Do you have other wedges in your bag?

Right up my alley man. I didn't want to drop a wedge, I wanted to add one and drop the 2-iron, but the data I collected over the course of ten good rounds is very relevant in this case. I was looking at both the 2 and the 3 irons and all of my wedges. I won't bore you with the details, but as I look at the results of my mini project as it pertains to removing a wedge as you're suggesting, it overwhelmingly suggests that consistent yardage gaps at the bottom end of your bag with the scoring clubs are FAR more important to your score than any other change you can make to your bag. So if you're looking for opinion, I wouldn't ever recommend that you remove a club from the lower end of your bag. Hope that helps!

Find your yardage gaps, determine the most frequent approaches in the short game and then go from there. Find a fitter and they can really help you figure this out. I had a Titleist fitter change my wedges to benefit me based on yardage gaps.

I agree with Barry B , take it out for at least 2 rounds to see how it goes. You don't have to carry 14 clubs. I say go for it.

The only irons I do not carry will be the 3 and 4 iron. I have always been told that the short game, and getting out of trouble, is more important than the long iron game.

use what works for you on the course you are playing, I'll rotate clubs in my bag depending on the course, usually wedges but whatever works.

Which club do you use the most during a normal round ? I would think you would use the PW a lot more than the 2 iron. I was a 2 iron guy for many years but I replaced it with a 17 degree hybrid which is lot more versatile, especially if you get in the thick stuff. If I was going to get rid of a wedge ( I use a PW, GW, SW and LW) I would get rid of the LW. Just my 2 cents.

I also use the 9 iron around the green, but wouldn't want to surrender the pw. Nice to have that little extra bit of loft if I need to get the ball up a little quicker/earlier. Nothing under a 5 iron in the bag as far as irons go.

This should come down to what club you use most. Out of your 70-80 shots per round - how many are with the 2 iron and how many are with a wedge? My guess is you only use the 2 iron on a select number of tee shots and long approaches on par 5s. Your wedge will be used on at least half of the holes, whether that is a full shot into a green or using it to chip. I wouldn't want to rely on my 9-iron at 75% for 9 shots a round.
