Saw several postings about AP2 and graphite shafts, thought I would throw in my findings. Now at 61 years young, 11 index, my last go around with irons were AP2 712 with Project x 5.5, struggled for a year and then left to another brand, game improvement iron. This past week went to a fitter in New England who had custom ordered 714 AP2, with Kuro Kage Graphite R flex shafts, the fitter let me hit them, and SOLD.

Had the fitter increase lofts 1 deg. strong, and magic. I have not hit the ball with irons this well in years, slight increase in distance but best of all a great feel, forgiving, and high trajectory. Shot dispersion has never been better. As well a confidence builder with the ability to shape shots.

These are by far, the best feeling irons on the market, and with the Kuro Kage shaft, light enough for old guys to hit. If considering AP1 or AP2, I found the AP 2 as forgiving as Brand X Game improvement irons.

I "have to go to Fairhaven, MA" for business in 2 weeks, so I'm going for an iron fitting at Manchester Lane.  I would otherwise go to my local AFC.  When I started 3 years ago, AP1 with an A-flex graphite was a good fit, but I definitely like the feel of Vokeys with the stiff wedge shaft now over the short irons in graphite.  I'm going to trust that they can get me my best combination of feel and forgiveness.  I'm 64 so I hope I'm as excited as you with a new fitting.

It will be worth the investment.  I paid nothing for a driver fitting at a box store, and the fitting was worth what I paid for it.  The fitter was a young gent and had bias to what was a good fit - but for him, not me.  I'll end up trading a 913 D2 at some point.

Good Luck at Fairhaven,, they are great, and the facility is first class. While there I would have them fit you for a Driver Shaft as well. Have found over the years the Box stores while trying to a good job, do not have all the tools that Fairhaven have. Agree with your comment about Vokey Wedges, just bought the new S grind with a Project X 5.5 shaft and have had the best wedge game in years. Good Luck in Fairhaven.

Bruce - I actually joined the club that is the Wisconsin Advance Fitting Center (AFC). Last year I lost my good presence of mind while that site was closed for weather and was looking for a lower launching shaft for my driver at the local BB store. The S+ shaft was almost $300, so they talked me into a new driver, but since they only had one loft in stock, it was not the best fit. The shaft on a different head works fine. I'm holding off until next spring for a 915 at the AFC I should never have strayed from. The Manchester Lane trip as a treat is excusable to stray from the AFC.

Glad to hear you had success. I just signed on today and was going to post the question about shafts comparable to the Project X shafts also. It was interesting to read your post about going to a different brand of irons as I also "experimented" with a "CX2H" irons as it seemed like this year I was losing about 10-15 yards on my irons and 15-20 years on my driver. They are just not the same as the AP2's. Going back to them but not to the Project X 5.5. I am a little surprised to hear that you went to regular flex with the graphite shafts. I would think that would be quite a change. I am turning 62 and playing to a 12.4 and not ready to play from the senior tees yet.  Thanks for the words of wisdom on this. I will keep these shafts in mind when I go to the Titelist fitter.

    John H,

My driver swing speed is 92-94, so play R shafts, and found the Kuro Kage to be a great fit in the AP2's. My X Brand game improvement irons have Project 5.0 graphite shafts, and found the Kuro Kage to be lighter and best of all shot dispersion, is dead on.

Went to Hilton Head this past week, and played 4 rounds, have never hit better iron shots.. Every shot was dead on.. Hope your fitting goes well, and do try the Kuro Kage shaft.. As you I am not ready to move forward, but the AP2's gave me confidence to break 80 from 6300 yards.
