I am a 5 handicapper and am currently playing miz irons (mp-57) that are 3/4" shorter than standard (I am 170 cm long). In the case of miz that means that the 6 iron is 36.5" (standard is 37.25"). Now I am considering changing my irons. One of my options is the Titleist 710 MB irons (or perhaps a combined set with the CB irons). However, when reading the custom options of these irons I first notice that they are as standard a 1/4" longer than the miz irons and the custom choices that are offered only says that 1/2" shorter are provided. That means that Titleist, for me, would turn out at best 1/2" longer than my current mp-57's (i.e. the MB 6 iron can only be shortened to 37").

So, my question is, is it possible to shorten the MB to the same length as my current mp-57's? Or, why does titleist only allow 1/2" shorter irons? What could be the problem if they where shortened more. The shafts I am considering are the KBS in regular flex or perhaps one of the Nippon options in stiff flex.

    Best,

    Mike

The reason we only shorten them 1/2" is that  even with a stock DYG (heavyweight steel)  shaft, it will swingweight below a D0.  If you switch to the KBS or the NS Pro shaft, the swingweight will be 1-2 swingweight points less than that because they are balanced differently.  However, if you add a Multi compound grip, we can get approximately 2 swingweights back.  If you will be happy playing with a set with very light swingweights, we will accomodate your request to build it at 1" shorter than standard.

Thanks for the info. It was as I suspected. So, what would the actual swing weights be for the MB's with a KBS shaft and Multi compound grip if they were shortened 1/2", 3/4" or 1".

The approximate swingweight for MB's 1/2" short with KBS shafts and multi grips would be C9, 3/4" would be C7.5, 1" would be C6.  All of these are approximate and +/- 1 swingweight.  The max we may be able to get the swingweight to at 1" short with that configuration would be a C8.
