Are iron fittings "generic"?

  1. Hi there. I was recently fitted at a GolfTec. It was recommended that I go with +3/4 length in shaft and 2 deg upright in lie angle. I was then given the option of 3 different iron sets from different manufacturers. I have since tried the Titleist AP1's and loved them. I want to order them but want to make sure my specs (see above) can carry through. So back to my question... if fitted and given specs like I have been, can I just apply those specs to any brand/model iron? Thanks.

You can say that in general, you are probably overlength and need an iron more upright.  The question is "upright" from what standard and 3/4" over what length.  GolfTec should have given you specifics such as 64.5° lie angle and 38 1/4" 6 iron because every manufacturer has a different standard as far as length and lie.  You may want to ask GolfTec for the specific lie and length and then try an AP1 in those specs.

  3. Thank you. It's interesting because they had 3 very different irons and gave me the generic specs for all 3. The actual standard specs for those irons vary. Even being "roughly" fit at a Golfsmith, they gave me different specs on the lie angle. I understand it's not completely objective.
