Hello, I am a 24 year old golfer, very athletic, and 6'3" in stature. I have been fitted recently by a titleist rep to a 909 D3, and have tried to use it over the last few months but the distance is lacking. I love the look of the D3 head, and would like to stay with it. What I would like to find out is what loft and what weight shaft I should look at for a swing speed of 110. I have all the stats on paper from the launch monitor so if any additional stats are required I can provide them. It's been very frustrating over the last three because I have tried many different combinations with all the Titleist drivers, and would like to find something that works. Please help!! Thanks-

What trajectory ball flight are you encountering?  What are your typical playing conditions, hard fairways, soft fairways, etc?  Are you hitting your current setup straight or are you having problems with hitting it right?

Just a few random questions to see if we can spur a root cause.

    Hey Aaron-

Thanks for the quick response. I typically play harder feeling fairways. With my current setup, I hit the driver straight or with a slight draw. I do not have any problems hitting it right. The trajectory is mid-high. The setup I currently have is a 909D2 9.5 with a fubuki 63 X. It feels like swinging a feather. I also have a 905R 9.5 Aldila NV 65 X which I can hit close to 30 yards farther than the D2. Perhaps this is spin related? I owned a D3 previous to both of these and I really liked it, I felt like the 909D3 was similar to the 905R but perhaps hotter off the face. Is this a good comparison? I would like to use the 909D3 with the right shaft, maybe you have some suggestions? Hopefully this provides some clues towards my issue. Thank you for your time!

  4. Why not just try the D3 with the Aldila NV 65 shaft!?

I suppose that's a good idea. Do you think the D3 head will launch similar to the R?

My best suggestion overall would be to take your current 909D3 setup and find a Titleist fitter with the full cart of shaft options and give them a try again, especially if you can find a launch monitor to compare your current driver with the rest of the shaft options.

If you are hitting the two 30yards different, I would say it is a host of factors: spin rate, launch angle, etc.  Without seeing the full numbers graphed out (long week :) ), I would have a hard time guessing.  Plus, I try to leave suggest approximations to the fine fitters of the world who work their craft brilliantly.

I would, however, ultimately agree if you like the NV 65 shaft, put that in the D3 head.  However, to avoid the cost associated, hit up the Titleist fitter and see if you can determine this ahead of time as best as you can.

Was reading your post and through my own testing of different shaft weights & flex, the heavier the shaft the lower the flight and more consistant.  I'm not anywhere near your size or strength (ss 102-106) and i struggle anytime i go below 75 gram shaft weight. There are many players on tour playing 80+ grams in their driver, seems like alot of the strong Pros go towards the Diamana Whiteboard 83 X flex.  I have played the WB 73 stiff and it is a great shaft with smooth feel, I have also tried the fubuki 63 x flex shaft and struggled with consistancy & dispersion. You may like the 83 gram WB shaft or the Fujikura Rombax 7Z08 or 8Z08 shaft as this is designed to hit lower & tight. You can always order your clubs to your prefered sw feel thru Titleist custom. Find a clubfitter that carries heavier weight demo shafts. Hope this helps

Ive just got a 909d3 with whiteboard 73x and everythings missing right with a cut, struggling to hit a draw, had it tipped .5, do you think this sounds to sfitt for me???

When i get it its got a really nice penetrating flight but theres to much spin on it if i dont,

The fitter recomended a 909d3 8.5 with V2 s 76 as he didnt have the whiteboards, do you think im better off goin for the V2, swing speed 106-110??

Sorry to hear the Whiteboard didn't work for you, sounded like a good fit, it is suggested to play this shaft straight in without tipping for 106 to 110, you may require some tipping at 110+. The V2's are nice shafts with good feel, I use them in my fairway (95s) & hybrid (100s). Your results sounds like the shaft may be a little stiff, however the loft could be an issue also, the D3 head also spins lower, flies lower. Have your fitter check the tip flex specs on the whiteboard & V2 vs the NV 65x you been gaming. WB &  V2  shafts may have a stiffer tip flex than your use too (low ball flight, low launch, hard to square up), with even having simular bend profile. You may also want to try your whiteboard in a more lofted D3 or D2 head to see how it performs. I have a friend that swings 106+ & plays the 83 stiff WB in a 9.5* D2 (very strong player) he just bombs it. I played the 73 stiff WB in a 9.5* D3 and it is great with perfect trajectory & flight. Also note the lighter shafts will tend to be more spin, higher flight than the heavy shafts. The 73 Whiteboard should have been simular to the NV 65x you were playing & stiffer tip & lower flight than the fubuki 63X, with more control, slightly lower launch & better flight. I would definatley see a professional club fitter, that has a launch monitor with different shaft weights, flexes, tip flexes & club head lofts before putting more money into a shaft that may or may not work for you! There are many players going to more lofted drivers for reasons more than you may think.
