I have been reading a lot about getting fit for your clubs and how important it is. I decided to take the plunge and be fit and order some new clubs. However, the experience was not what I expected. The pro took me out to the driving range to hit balls. First he watched me hit a couple with my current irons then I hit the AP1 and then AP2 off a black board so he could see if the club was too upright or too flat. I have been hearing all this talk about spin rates club head speeds etc...but at my fitting it was just the pro watching me swing and watching the flight of my ball. I only hit one AP1 6 iron and one AP2 6 iron. Then I hit a 909D2 9.5 driver. We didn't change shafts or anything. He just kept looking at the driver clubface to see where I was hitting. I will say that I was hitting the ball more consistently during the fitting but I was also hitting the irons off the flat black board not in the grass. Overall we spent about 45 minutes. 15 minutes I was warming up with my current irons (Wilson Deep Red 2 Tour ) and 30 minutes for the fitting.  Should we have tried multiple shafts and set-ups? At the end he told me he recommended a regular to shift staff and said I needed my clubs to be a little longer and 2 degrees flat. Is it possible for the pro to just watch a few swings and know exactly what I need? Was I fit correctly?

It is possible for very good fitters to estimate spin and launch without a monitor.  Did you go to a Titleist Fitter?

Yes I went to a Titleist Fitter. He has a very good reputation and is a great golfer.  I was just expecting to try more shafts, lofts, etc... when being fit. Maybe he has done enough fitting to know pretty well what I need from the get go?

Every fitter has their own style of fitting and we do encourage all our fitters to follow our Titleist fitting methodology.  After talking with you and your fitter, it seems that everything has been resolved to your satisfaction.  I understand that your irons and driver have already shipped and your fairways will be following in several weeks. When you receive all your new clubs, our rep in your area would like to invite you to meet with your fitter or to come to a Fitting day closer to your home  to check your clubs out with a launch monitor.

As an experienced clubfitter, I will tell you this fitter probably did fit you correctly.  However, the point of a launch monitor, taking measurements, sole tape, etc...is to validate what the eyes are telling the fitter.  Just like your elementary school math teacher told you...always check your work.

I agree. I was actually happy with the fitting. It was windy and cold that day so I didn't expect to be out there very long. I was hitting the ball well with the clubs that I tried (D2, AP1, and AP2). So I really can't complain. I got my new AP2's last week and I am hoping to get the rest of my clubs this week.  The fairways and utilities are on back order. :(   Overall I do feel that having the pro fit me to the clubs was still much much better than just buying clubs straight off the shelf.
