I dont like the longer driver shafts of todays drivers. I'm 50 years old with a suspect back and have lost disctance. I'd like to go back to a maybe 44 or 44-1/2" driver shaft. I realize to do that you need to add weight to the head of the driver to keep the swingweight consistent. My question is: Is it better to shorten a heavier weight shaft and add less weight or a lighter weight shaft and add more weight to the head? My goal is to add consistency by going shorter but will the shortened lighter weight shaft give me some distance advantages over the heavier weight shortened shaft? Does this make sense to anyone?

determine the length and shaft weight and flex that work best for you- FIRST. then do the swing weight math AFTER.  Length and shaft type are much more important than a few swing weight points.

Hi Doug Going to a 44 or 441/2 inch driver can certainly help with consistency, no doubt about that, however, with the right fitting I personally think that consistency can still be retained with a driver of 45 inch. Most good fitters should have shorter driver shafts, and if thats what you feel comfortable with, then a good fitter will work with you on that. As for the weight of shafts etc, if it was me, I would stick to the 60g to 70g range and let Titleist swing weight it accordingly to c D2 which they will be happy to do for you. But, as I said, with the right head/shaft combo a length of 45 inches could easily be retained so adding that bit more length to your drives whilst still retaining that all too important consistency that you need. Go with an open mind about length of shaft, and the fitter will advise and compare shots on Trackman. Good luck Doug Jason
