St. Andrews as a Single

Traveling in May to St. Andrews to visit my daughter who is studying abroad this semester. It sounds like the courses at St. Andrews rely on the starters to place singles with groups about to go off. So it appears you don't have a great sense of if/when you'll go off. Any tips or insight is appreciated for course selection as a single and how you deal with uncertain tee times & warm-up.

Torrey Pines has been on my list for years. I finally got to play the North and South course this week. I also went up to Encinitas and got to visit the Scotty Cameron Gallery. Two items off my bucket list in one week. Always love Pinehurst. Great resort and courses. Friendly people and awesome food. Can drive up there in about three hours and do not have to walk the courses.

I made it on. I entered the draw on Friday for Saturday play. Saturday morning I hadn’t moved much from my prior evening draw slot. Through a crazy roll of the dice, I was told if I could get my clubs and be back to the starter in 22 minutes (18 by the time I left the starter) I could get off because the people ahead of me on the list hadn’t shown.

Ran, which I hadn’t done in 20 years, to my hotel, put in my contacts and grabbed my clubs. Ran back to the starter and walked straight onto the tee box. Hadn’t hit a shot or a putt - not what I’d recommend for the first time playing The Old Course.

Oh, and I happened to meet Iona that morning.

I am looking to make this trip in the next year or so. I would like to be single digit hcp by the time that I do it. Im at a 13.2 now but this is my first year actually practicing to get better.

First golf trip of the year booked for Northern Michigan during Memorial Day weekend. Playing Belvedere in Charlevoix and Greywalls in Marquette. I’m so excited to experience the courses I see and hear so much about. I’m newer to the game and always hope to score low but honestly just enjoy the relaxation that comes with being outside and appreciating nature. Anyone ever travel “up north” before? Only have time for these two rounds this time around but would like to make it an annual thing. TIA Team Titleist!

Just played Pinehurst 2, 4, 7, and the Cradle.

2026 Pro v 1x left dash scored very well. Greens firm but the new left – had plenty of check and release on the greens..

I spent a summer in Edinburgh (easy train ride to St. A.) in the late 1990s and got on once as a single. Had a great time. Paired with two Germans and an oldish local. Sounds like the process may be different now but it was a lot of fun and well worth the effort.

You're in for a treat for sure!! Marquette is my hometown and I make it a point to get back to golf Greywalls at least once every season. They broke the mold after building that track. My profile pic is me putting on Hole 5 which I view as the signature hole on the course. True risk/reward driveable Par 4 with a sheer granite face guarding the entire right side of the green and more rock outcrop guarding the left side. Marc Gilmore - Director of Golf Operations is an outstanding person and will certainly provide some great insights to a first-time visitor. I'd also recommend viewing the No Laying Up - Tourist Sauce Michigan finale episode prior to making the trip. Hit 'em straight, enjoy the views and have fun!!

Zachary T you picked 2 excellent "up north" courses to try! Greywalls is exceptional IMHO, probably top 2 or 3 favorite course to play here in Michigan for me. Belvedere is no slouch of a course either. Enjoy your rounds and let us know how you did, and have fun out there!

I didn’t know anything about the golf in the UP until someone told me about the courses there. Definitely looks like some great courses there. I think Boyle and Bay Harbor are also some nice ones there. Enjoy and have a great time. Hit ‘em straight.

Think about Pawleys Island. Google is your best friend. Some good local restaurants there also.

Food, Sea Captains Table, 3002 Ocean Blvd, MB

MB is the number one golf destination for a reason, after all. :PGA event there this weekend.

Be sure and as about the greens. It's top dressing top season. Don't want to putt on sand.
